About the Event

Join this community-wide cleanup in Alpena on April 23 from 10am-12pm, led by Great Lakes Great Responsibility as we divide and conquer to cleanup our shorelines and across Alpena. Volunteers, we need your help cleaning up neighborhoods, downtown and our beaches.

Volunteers, sign-in and grab your supplies at 10AM at one of two stations: Starlite Beach near the pavilion or downtown Alpena in Culligan Plaza. Gloves, buckets, and trash grabbers will be provided. Please bring your own supplies if you have some and bring a mug for a free cup of BoomTown Roasters coffee (at Starlite Beach station).

Divers will be in the water at Rockport State Recreation Area keeping Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary clean. IF YOU PLAN TO DIVE please contact James Mott (jm@mottunderwater.com)

This event is happening in partnership with Mott Underwater, Huron Pines, Huron Pines AmeriCorps, the Alpena Downtown Development Authority, BoomTown Roasters and the Lake Huron Forever Initiative. The Lake Huron Forever initiative was developed in 2019 by community foundation and conservation partners from the United States and Canada to advance water quality protection and sustainable communities on both sides of the lake. It is facilitated locally by conservation nonprofit Huron Pines.

As we clean from 10am-12pm, we will count how many pieces of trash we collect to contribute to the #GreatLakes1Million challenge, led by Great Lakes Great Responsibility.

Our clean up agenda:

10AM: Meet at Starlite Beach or Culligan Plaza to sign-in and grab supplies (if needed)

10:10-11:45AM: Divide and conquer different sections of Alpena along roadsides, beaches and downtown to pick up trash, counting how many pieces you collect

11:45AM (or earlier): Meet back at Starlite Beach to weigh trash and share trash count data

12:00PM: Final trash tally and total weight revealed -- celebration time! Prizes to be given for most trash collected.

Cheers to clean water! Please share far and wide!
